Client Success Story: A Journey to Self-Sufficiency

As a case manager with Sandhills Community Action Program, I have had the privilege of witnessing many inspiring success stories, but few are as remarkable as Katina Stephens’s journey. When she first came to us, she was a single mother of three, working as a housekeeper and struggling to make ends meet. She applied for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, which provided much-needed housing stability while she worked tirelessly to support her family.

Recognizing that greater financial independence required further education, she made a bold decision to enroll in the STARS Self-Sufficiency Program. Through her dedication and perseverance, she earned a certification in medical billing and coding, opening the door to better career opportunities. At the same time, she participated in the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program, allowing her to save money in an escrow account as her income grew.

Her commitment to personal and professional growth has paid off tremendously. She secured employment and has maintained steady employment for 12 years, advancing from cashier to shift lead supervisor. Today, she has set her sights on two major goals: becoming a store manager and purchasing a home using the funds she diligently saved through the FSS escrow program. Katina is pictured here holding her disbursement check.

Katina is a shining example of how determination, support, and opportunity can transform lives. Her story is a testament to the power of self-sufficiency programs in helping individuals break the cycle of poverty and achieve economic independence. We at Sandhills Community Action Program are incredibly proud of her journey and look forward to seeing her continue to thrive.
